Speaking of ambi lowers (AR-15 lower receivers) at SHOT Show 2016, DefenseReview (DR) got a look at another one when we ran into Josh Clark of Falkor Defense, who had an interesting little recessed-suppressed custom 9mm tactical AR (AR-15) SBR (Short Barreled Rifle)/carbine-type SMG (Submachine Gun) with him at a fun evening event hosted by a number of companies, including Cobalt Kinetics, Fostech Outdoors and Elite Tactical Systems (ETS), at The Range 702. The gun Clark had with him was essentially a custom 9mm version of the Falkor Defense Blitz AR15 Ambi SBR 5.56mm NATO (5.56x45mm NATO)/300 Blackout (300BLK) tactical AR that was outfitted with a number of new Falkor tactical AR components and accessories, in addition to the usual ambi (ambidextrous) controls (ambidextrous lower receiver). The new products included a Falkor Optimus PDW Stock (Buttstock), a Falkor MACH-15 Ambi (Ambidextrous) Charging Handle, and a “Fatty” M-LOK modular tactical handguard/rail system–and the gun looked pretty good.
DR forgot to ask what kind of 9mm mags the gun takes, Glock or Colt. We hope it takes Glock mags, as that would mean one can use the new Elite Tactical Systems ETS Glock 18-type translucent polymer 31-round 9mm mag (33 rounds with +2 Glock extension) and/or ETS Glock 9mm 22-round mag, whic look really goood. That said, DR greatly prefers 5.56mm NATO and 300BLK SBRs to 9mm Parabellum/9x19mm NATO SMGs, especially in a PDW-sized recessed-suppressed SBR profile, just for the record.
The Falkor Defense Optimus PDW Stock 4-position telescoping/retractable PDW buttstock was the most interesting thing on the gun, and it’s definitely worth watching the embedded video we shot (see below) to see exactly how it works, as it’s pretty slickly designed. DR was pretty impressed with it (and the gun, itself), assuming it’s actually reliable and durable under adverse conditions and high round count, and manufacturable at reasonable cost. We’ll try to find out. The hinged fold-over mechanism may in fact be very robust, but we don’t know.
DR also liked the Falkor Mach-15 Ambidextrous Charging Handle, assuming the same with regard to performance under high round count and adverse conditions. We didn’t inspect the underside of the Mach-15. We’re yet not sure how the Mach-15 differs mechanically to the Falkor Dragon Tail 15 Ambidextrous Charging Handle, but it looks different, and DR prefers the look of the Mach 15.
The Falkor Fatty M-LOK Tactical Handguard/Rail System’s large diameter allows the end-user to mount a muzzle can (silencer/sound suppressor) underneath it, making for a nice, handy lo-pro/lo-vis tactical AR SBR/PDW (Personal Defense Weapon) package.
Defense Review has no idea how the Falkor Defense guns run under the aforementioned high round count and adverse conditions, but they and their in-house-designed-and-developed components/accessories certainly look pretty good. It’s frankly just nice to have another boutique AR manufacture out there making some interesting guns and components accessories. DR is a proponent of ambidextrous controls on an AR, so we’re glad to see that on all the Falkor guns, including the Blitz, Breacher 308 Ambi, Caitlyn PSR AR15 Ambi, Alpha DMR 308 Ambi, Petra Steel 300 Win, Petra Carbon Fiber 300 Win and Recce 223 Ambi Sporter.
The only thing DR wasn’t crazy about on the gun we saw was the gold coating/paint scheme, but we assume that was just for show/display, since it was a custom gun. We like our guns a little lower key over here.
Oh, and we should also mention the gun sported an Aimpoint Micro T-1 mini red dot sight combat optic mounted on a Fortis F1 Optics Mount.
