DefenseReview (DR) was able to do some semi-auto and full-auto rock n’ rollin’ with a SIG MCX LVAW (Low-Visibility Assault Weapon) “Black Mamba”-config piston AR assault SBR/PDW (Short Barreled Rifle/Personal Defense Weapon) chambered in 300 Blackout (300BLK) at the SIG SAUER Academy range during the SIG SAUER New Media Writers’ Event, and we were able to run both subsonic and supersonic ammo through the gun. We actually ran some staggered mags, where 300BLK rounds alternated in the mag between supersonic and subsonic, which was interesting.
While DR advises always using both earpro/hearing pro (ear protection/hearing protection, i.e. “ears”) and eyepro (eye protection) when shooting, one really doesn’t have to while running the the MCX suppressed with the excellent SIG SAUER prototype muzzle can (silencer/sound suppressor) and subsonic ammo we were using. However, if you’re going to run the gun with supersonic ammo, you’ll have to wear hearing pro.
The SIG MCX LVAW suppressed assault SBR/PDW ran like an absolute champ with both supersonic and subonic 300BLK ammo. Defense Review didn’t experience or witness any malfunctions with any of the demo guns during our range session. However, the MCX’s cyclic rate of fire (ROF) was pretty high at 927 RPM (Rounds Per Minute), so semi-auto fire would be the preferred mode for most situations. A SIG SAUER rep told us that the cyclic ROF on the (MCX) production guns will be a little lower. Ideally, DR would like to see the MCX’s full-auto cyclic rate of fire brought below the 700 RPM threshold, if possible, but we really liked the gun we handled and fired. It’s a pretty cool weapon system, especially in 300BLK caliber.
Defense Review is a big fan of 300 Blackout for dynamic CQB/CQC (Close Quarters Battle/Close Quarters Combat), and for medium-range engagements out to 300 yards, and even possibly out to approximately 440 yards, which is the 300BLK’s outer envelope with specialized supersonic ammo, like that made by PNW Arms, for example.
