The U.S. ARMY and Marine Corps need a multi-caliber, Modular Weapon System (MWS) that can shoot all the major cartridges to meet the myriad of threats on the 720 degree, Non-Linear Battlefield (720 NLB) based on upgraded the combat-proven, M16/M4 rifle/carbine family whose manual-of-arms is in the muscle memory of every Soldier and Marine for high levels of firepower speed & accuracy. Spare parts to maintain these weapons are prolific throughout the services. Call this notionally the “M16A5” or “M4A7”; “a Band of Rifle/Carbine Brothers”.
Organic Unit Counter-Drone Air Defense
U.S. military ground maneuver units need an instantly deployable, semi-automatic, magazine-fed shotgun counter-drone, low altitude Air Defense capability NOW–before a major war to stop these First Person View (FPV) Precison Directed Munitions (PDMs) from hovering at shoulder height and discovering openings in our camouflage and armor, then kamikaze diving in to explode our positions and vehicles–as is taking place daily in the UKRaine-Russo war. We can’t be buying a new weapon in a 10-year procurement cycle every time we need a new cartridge firepower effect capability–like area effect, 12 gauge/20mm shells to down drones.
Colt makes essentially a “M16A5” or “M4A7” variant of M16s/M4s already in service in the USA/Mc called the “CM7” that is modular that with adapters shoot 7.62mm x 51mm NATO, 6.8mm x 51mm SIG Fury, 5.56mm x 45mm NATO, 7.62mm x 39mm or 5.45mm x 39mm captured from enemies…and 12 gauge/20mm shells using the Genesis Arms, upper receiver, Bolt Carrier Group (BCG) and 10-25 round magazines/drums to swat down drones. The Israelis have a rapid night reflex red dot aiming system and STRATUS Support Systems has a Quick Release docking system so the Soldier’s/Marine’s arms are not exhausted trying to hold the M16A5/M4A7 in his hands for hours but can instead instantly shoulder it & fire must faster than being slung across the chest or back.
LASTers should NOT be Last
Leaders, Aviators, Assaulters and Sustainers (LASTers) have to have their hands free to perform their tasks and cannot afford the too-slow-to-employ, danger of their shoulder weapon slung at their backs. The folding stock, M1A1 .30 caliber carbine of WW2 Paratrooper, “Band of Brothers” book and mini-series fame with 18 inch barrel folded compact to just 25.51 inches that was carried in a hip holster for hands free “jumping from perfectly good airplane” then snap shooting enemy Soldiers. The M16A5/M4A7 with a 16 inch barrel for over 500 meter range reach with a variable 1x to 4x power optic and red dot reflex sight can fold compact with the LAW Tactical side folding stock device; PRODUCT CODE: 99312 GOV / MIL / LE / OEM PRODUCT CODE: 99329, to 26.5 inches long to fit into a new MOLLE hip holster by SKT industries; a return of the paratrooper Assault Carbine (AC) that is also a shoulder rig, concealable, Personal Defense Weapon (PDW) for urban operations.
Every 720 NLB Threat Covered…
Unit commanders with the M16A5/M4A7 MWS can configure their Soldiers’/Marines’ weapons to fire the most optimal cartridges for their missions; if in the Battle against the Earth (TBATE) closed terrain jungles, 5.56mm; for open terrain deserts, 7.62mm or 6.8mm long. If combating the Battle against Man (TBAM) drone spies & swarms that must she shot down, 12 gauge/20mm shells–which can be specialty pyrotechnic types like EMac Tactical’s “Dragon’s Breath” 00 buckshot shells for greatest effects.
Non-Linear Ammunition Reupply Logistical Break-Downs
During the 3rd Infantry Division (Mechanized)’s “Thunder Run” into Baghdad in 2003, their resupply trucks were blocked from replenishing their ammunition and their Soldiers had to use captured enemy weapons & ammo. The M16A5/M4A7’s modular components enable captured enemy 7.62mm short and 5.45mm to be collected by designated “VULTURE” teams to fire it thru U.S. weaponry and optics for maximum firepower effects.
Summary/Conclusion
We propose the Army and Marine Corps take one or all of the following courses of action to attain an Immediate Operational Capability (IOC) against enemy drones, improve their LASTERs’ human factors; manual task & firepower performance, and be ready to overmatch as many threats as possible within the 720 NLB:
COA A: Purchase Genesis Arms 12 gauge/20mm uppers, BCGs and magazines plus STRATUS docking systems to retrofit to M110/SR25 7.62mm x 51mm Sniper Rifles fired by Designated Marksman Riflemen (DMR) on an emergency basis
COA B: Purchase Colt CM7s as the M16A5/M4A7 MWS with all possible cartidge adapters and STRATUS docking systems for the entire U.S. ARMY not receiving 6.8mm SIG SAUER M7s and the entire USMC so unit commanders can optimize their unit’s firepower as needed for open and closed TBATE terrain fights against all possible TBAM foes–to include defeating drones using the Genesis Arms 12 gauge/20mm shotgun upper receiver module
COA C: Purchase Colt CM7s with all possible adapters including Genesis Arms upper receiver modules and STRATUS docking systems for a number of Designated Air Defense Shotgunman (DADS); say 1x Soldier/Marine in the rifle squad to firepower combat over-match verticle drone threats.
Horizontal firepower would not be lost because he would also have a 5.56mm shooting Assault Carbine/Personal Defense Weapon like the Colt CM7 MWS with LAW Tactical side-folder or Sub-Compact Weapon (SCW) in a SKT Industries, Steve McQueen “Wanted: DEAD or Alive” hip holster like WW2 Paratroopers carried M1A1 folding stock M1 .30 caliber (7.62mm x 33mm) carbines for hands-free firepower effective out to 300 meters–which is far better than short-range pistol bullet shooting hand guns.
4. Field test the Israeli IWI computerized anti-drone, night/reflex sighting system with the CM7/M16A5/M4A7 in 12 gauge/20mm. Purchase the required units to fit to DADS Soldiers/Marines.
