Earlier this month, DefenseReview (DR) spoke with Patriot Ordnance Factory (POF-USA) president/CEO Frank DeSomma on the phone, and he cryptically told your humble correspondent, “The Revolution’s comin’, David.” Then, on January 16 (2016), the text messages started rolling in with messages on the new POF-USA Revolution, a very-small-frame 7.62x51mm .308 Win. tactical short-stroke piston/op-rod (push-type operating rod) AR rifle /carbine/SBR (Short Barreled Rifle), saying:
“The days of 8,9,10[-lb] 7.62×51 weapon systems are coming to an end. ????”
“The lightest, smallest .308 weapon system in the world ????”
“6lbs 2.23oz Or 6.15 lbs ????”
“Which one is the Renegade? ?? Or Which on is .223 and which one is .308? ??”
All accurate and appropriate, it would appear, at least from what we viewed and handled at the POF-USA booth at SHOT Show 2016 (DR made this our very first stop on Day 1 of the exhibition). As you can see in the accompanying photos and videos, the POF-USA Revolution 7.62mm’s roughly the same size as the POF-USA Renegade Gen4 5.56mm straight-tube DGI (Direct Gas Impingement) tactical AR (except for the magwell, of course) making it one serious little piece of ballistic badassery. It’s light, it’s handy, it’s 7.62mm NATO/.308 Win., and it looks good. What’s not to like? All in all, it’s pretty glorious, especially the 6.15-lb 10.5″ (10.5-inch) shorty. Very sweet.
Anyway, just like the rest of POF-USA’s guns, the Revolution utilizes POF’s E2 (E-Squared) Extraction Chamber for enhanced/optimized reliability. DR really likes this feature. It also sports a 10-position gas regulator in the gas block. The POF flat AR trigger’s a nice touch, too. Oh, and it only has 9 parts than are different from the Renegade, according to DeSomma.
Defense Review’s been around guns a pretty long time, now. This one’s pretty special…provided our usual caveat, that it’s reliable, accurate and durable under adverse conditions and high round count. We can’t wait to T&E and review it at the range, including a variant with a recessed-suppressed OSS integrated can (silencer/sound suppressor) attached. We’re guessing the gun’s a runner.
Oh, and I guess Frank’s right that “it takes a Renegade [Gen4] to start a Revolution”–and this is one particular Revolution DR can really get behind.
