Patriot Ordnance Factory's (POF-USA) new E2 (pronounced "E-Squared") Extraction Chamber on their latest Gen-4 tactical gas piston/op-rod (push-type operating rod) AR rifle/carbine/SBR's is important enough in DefenseReview's opinion to warrant the third article out of the gate from SHOT Show 2014. The POF E2 Chamber essentially accomplishes the same feat as HK's chamber fluting on their older guns, floating the cartridge case right out of the chamber and taking a lot of stress off the weapon's extractor. However, that's where the similarity ends. The E2 Extraction Chamber utilizes very short flutes and what would appear to be about a 45 degree angle to delay the action a little bit and blow some of the gases outside the full circumference of the expended cartridge case to float the case out. So, the POF E2 Extraction Chamber doesn't damage the cartridge case and impart the telltale fluting striations, so you can still reload the brass.
The new POF E2 Extraction Chamber is utilized on all Gen-4 POF P415 and POF P308 tactical AR carbines/SBRs so the latest P-415's and P-308's coming off the line will feature it.
Based on the video DR watched and POF-USA CEO Frank Desomma's explanation of the technology, Defense Review believes the E2 Chamber to be one of the most important things we saw at the show, since it should significantly increase their piston ARs' reliability, at least in theory, since extractor stress and breakage is a fairly big issue with AR reliability and durability. Eliminate it, and you eliminate a major point of weakness on the gun, and it looks like that's exactly what POF has accomplished.
Not only that, but, according to Desomma and others at the company, the guns are also really accurate, achieving between .5 MOA (Minute of Angle) and 1 MOA accuracy, which is a great achievement out of any tactical AR, let alone a piston gun.
Anyway, Jeremy Ellis was kind enough to take DR through one of the new Gen-4 P308 carbines on the wall at the booth.
