In our recent article on the LWRCI Six8 M6.8-UCIW (Ultra-Compact Individual Weapon), we also mentioned the Magpul PMAG 30-round 6.8 SPC (6.8x43mm SPC) mag, which was developed specifically for it. Since DefenseReview (DR) was interested in gleening more information about the magazine's development and unique design aspects, we contacted LWRCI Project Manager Jeff Clemmer, and he replied to us with the following information (slightly edited for readability):
"LWRCI designed the new SIX8 platform from the ground up to optimize the feed geometry for the 6.8 round. By lengthening and widening the magazine the rounds stack better, feed at a less severe angle, and allow for a slightly longer OAL of cartridge. We designed the original prototype magazine along with the platform. As we were getting into the early prototypes we asked if Magpul, given their years of expertise designing mags, if they would like to partner on the project by developing the magazine. We worked with Magpul as we finalized mag well dimensions, mag catch position, magazine spring strength etc; Our engineers and their engineers worked closely developing the platform and the magazine together so that they were optimized for the 6.8 cartridge. While this was going on we were also working with ATK on the ammo. They designed the 90gr Gold Dot so that it was achieving maximum velocity at safe pressure, while maintaining excellent accuracy and producing little flash from the 8.5" barrel. All three groups worked closely together to produce the optimum 6.8 platform, magazine and ammunition. It was a pretty cool project to be involved with.
The new Magpul [6.8 SPC] mags will allow for an OAL of 2.32". Most of the earlier 6.8 mags that will fit a standard AR15 magwell allow for around [2.29″] of OAL. While we did not have any specific boattail round in mind, the dimensions of our new mag will allow for the 140gr Berger [like the SSA 6.8mm SPC 140gr VLD Berger round, for example] to be loaded."
