DefenseReview (DR) broke the story on DSG Technology's Multi-Environment Ammunition (MEA) supercavitating/underwater rifle ammunition at NDIA Infantry Small Arms Systems Symposium 2011. Anyone reading that piece could probably tell that we were pretty excited about it. Well, the story gets even better this year. At NDIA Joint Armaments Conference, Exhibition & Firing Demonstration 2012, Mark Baciak of PNW Arms showed us production samples that PNW manufactured right here in the USA that are "ready to be shipped domestically and worldwide". So, the new DSG Technology/PNW Arms supercavitating/underwater rifle ammo, including AP rifle ammo (armor-piercing/armor-penetrating rifle ammunition), part of a DSG/PNW "fused project", is now Berry-compliant.

PNW Arms is producing two variants of the ammo. The standard variant is a solid-copper round called the PNW MEA GPS (General Purpose Supercavitating) round. The AP round, which utilizes a tungsten penetrator tip/front portion, is called the PNW MEA DCS (Dual-Core Supercavitating) round. The 7.62mm NATO (7.62x51mm NATO)-caliber DSG/PNW MEA GPS round has an effective underwater/sub-aqua range of 15 meters (15m). By contrast, a conventional 7.62mm NATO round has an effective underwater range of about 2 feet before it dumps all its energy. The 7.62mm NATO DSG/PNW MEA DCS round has an effective underwater/sub-aqua range of 30 meters (30m), or double the distance of the GPS round.

"The nice thing about the supercavitation effect is actually what it does from a terminal perspective when it hits its intended target. So, underwater, and when you're trying to go for any type of soft targets, the thing that's going to disable the target is called…has to do with something called hydrostatic shock. It' not the wound channel," Baciak said. Expounding on the hydrostatic effect on soft targets (human beings), Baciak said "Now, what we want to do here, if this [MEA ammo] actually [penetrates] soft tissue, what’ll end up happening is that supercavitating effect will continue inside the body. So, what you’re [looking at] is a massive pressure wave that will internally build up. And, because of the way that most creatures are a majority water from a composition, you can imagine those effects are terminal." In other words, if the MEA ammo hits someone within its effective range underwater, the effects will be devastating, and they will most likely not survive it.

But, it gets even better, because PNW Arms will also be manufacturing 5.56mm NATO (5.56x45mm NATO)-caliber MEA ammo (GPS and DCS rounds) very soon, which means that U.S. Naval SPECWAR (Special Warfare) assaulters/operators, i.e., U.S. Navy SEALs, including U.S. Naval Special Warfare DEVelopment GroUp (NSWDG)/DEVGRU assaulters/operators, will have a whole new ammo capability and advantage at their disposal in their MK18/CQBR (Close Quarters Battle Receiver) and HK416 5.56 tactical AR SBRs (AR-15 Short Barreled Rifles)/sub-carbines and carbines.

But that's not all, Monty. Behind door number three, PNW Arms will have .50 BMG (12.7x99mm NATO) and .338 Lapua Magnum MEA GPS and DCS ammo, as well, for above-water/super-aqua long-range sniping and anti-materiel neutralization applications, in addition to the underwater sniping and anti-materiel applications.
