Gun Nuts Media and Load Out Room (LOR) recently published pieces (see here and here) on U.S. Naval Special Warfare’s (NSW) adoption/procurement of the Glock 19 (G19) compact high-capacity 9mm (9mm Parabellum/9x19mm NATO) pistol as the official sidearm/secondary weapon of the USN SPECWAR operators, i.e., Navy SEAL’s, thus replacing the SIG SAUER P226 in that role. In DefenseReview’s (DR) opinion, if those articles are true and accurate, this was a good decision, since not only is the G19 arguably the best all-around 9mm pistol in the world (again, in DR’s opinion) due to its size, weight, reliability, accuracy, durability, maintainability and overall design efficiency, but it’s also your humble correspondent’s primary concealed carry (CCW) gun, and has been for many years, now–so I’m arguably also a bit biased. The Navy’s decision to go with the G19 comes on the heals of the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) approving the G19 for use by USMC MARSOC (Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command) assaulters/operators as an option instead of M45A1 Close Quarter Battle Pistol .45 ACP single-stack 1911 pistol, if they so choose.
I’m actually on the record advocating for the adoption of the Glock 17 (G17) and Glock 19 pistols by the U.S. Army for their Modular Handgun System (MHS) program, and I’d recommend that the reader take a few minutes to peruse that piece to read my argument.
Anyway, Defense Review doesn’t yet know whether or not US NSW will be adopting the Gen-3 Glock 19 or Glock 19 Gen4, since the neither the Gun Nuts Media piece nor the LOR piece specified this aspect. For the record (again), DR prefers the Glock 19 Gen3, since that gun was already essentially mechanically perfect (or just about as perfect as it gets in a production military pistol), and trust the Gen-3’s single-recoil-spring design/setup over the Gen-4’s dual-recoil-spring design. It’s (Gen-3 design) simply more battle-proven…and DR-proven. We do, however like the Gen-4’s modular backstrap, which allows one to quickly add an extended beavertail tang, which we prefer. We therefore wish the Gen-3 G19 (and G17) offered this option. Oh, well. As the Mick Jagger of The Rolling Stones says, you can’t always get what you want.
In any case, with the Glock 19 pistol, the SEALs will now be able to maintain and repair their own guns in the field, provided they’ve got spare parts, a standard Glock tool, or even better, a Strike Industries SI Glock All In One (AIO) Tool with them.
The SEALs’ adoption of the G19 also theoretically opens the door to units like U.S. Navy DEVGRU (formerly known as SEAL Team Six) replacing their Walther PPS sub-compact single-stack 9mm pistols with Glock 43 (G43) slim-line sub-compact single-stack 9mm pistols for continuity with the G19’s manual of arms and maintenance/repair–as good as the Walther PPS is.
Editor’s Note: DefenseReview’s current favorite custom/customized G19 is theNous Defions/Arsenal Democracy (AD) Blackside Glock 19 (G19) outfitted with the AD SwiTC/H Trigger, DOCTER Sight III Bronze 3.5 MOA mini-red dot sight/combat optic, Trijicon Night Sight Suppressor Set and Storm Lake Threaded QPQ Barrel for silencer/sound suppressors. DR handled a fully-customized Blackside Glock 17 (G17) and lesser-customized Blackside Glock 19 at the tail end of SHOT Show 2015 in an interesting location (you can see the AD Blackside Glocks in the accompanying photos, including the title photo, which is of a fully-customized/spec’d-out Blackside G17), and it’s a pretty rockin’ little pistol package. So, a Blackside G19 may just be SEAL-proof/ready, as is.
