While DefenseReview (DR) was at SOFIC 2015 (Special Operations Forces Industry Conference 2015), we got a chance to look at some of Grey Ghost Gear’s (GGG) latest/newest products, including their tactical armor plate carriers/tactical vests and stand-alone multi-hit hard armor plates on their boat (or yacht), right on the water, outside the convention hall. The products looked good. The two plate carriers DR viewed were the Grey Ghost Gear Lo-Vis MBAV Plate Carrier and the Minimalist Plate Carrier, although the latter appears to be the only one with its own dedicated product page on the Grey Ghost Gear website.
The Minimalist Plate Carrier’s raison d’etre is, of course, minimalism, and its design philosopy falls under the “lighter is better” category. The Minimalist is a one-size-fits-all vest, features six rows of MOLLE/PALS webbing, and can carry 10×12 plates or larger ESAPI plates. It sports ajustable shoulder straps and elastic side straps for a “snug fit, while still allowing for unexpected dynamic motion”. The inside of the carrier is lined with Air Mesh for passive cooling, and the plate pockets are lined with LiteLok pack cloth for abrasion resistance. Available colors are Black, Coyote Brown, Kryptek Highlander™, Kryptek Mandrake™, Kryptek Typhon™ and MultiCam®.
We’ll try to get some more info on the Grey Ghost Gear Lo-Vis MBAV Plate Carrier as soon as possible, we’ll try to follow up with an article specifically on the Beyond Clothing/Grey Ghost Gear Rig Light Jacket combat/tactical jacket it’s being worn under on the mannequin. Defense Review first saw the Rig Light Jacket at SHOT Show 2015, and we believe we’ve got some good hi-res photos and video on it from the show. The Rig Light is a midlayer softshell jacket made from a proprietary -4-way-stretch woven fabric, and features a zip-hideable ripstop nylon hood and DWR treatment to shed light rain and snow. It’s a really cool jacket, and we dig it, right down to it’s tacticool green color.
The Grey Ghost Gear Level III, Level III+ and Level IV multi-hit stand-alone hard armor plates Defense Review viewed and handled looked and felt good to us. The GGG Level III+ Stand Alone Plate 10″x12.1″ Swimmers Large variant is 1.1″ thick, and comes in at only 4.5 lbs. The Grey Ghost Gear improved level IV stand-alone armor plate comes in at about 7 lbs.
