While we were walking the floor at SOFIC 2015 (Special Operations Industry Conference 2015), DefenseReview (DR) came stopped by the DSG technology booth to check out a new and very badass little ultra-lightweight, manpackable 60mm mortar and munitions (ammo) weapon system called iMortar. You might remember DSG Technology as the developers and makers of the very interesting MEA (Multi-Environment Ammunition) supercavitating rifle ammo (more recently named Cav-X Subsonic Armor-piercing Swimmer ammo) and SSA (Super Sniper Ammunition) precision rifle/sniper ammo. Editor’s Note: PNW Arms is no longer manufacturing the MEA and SSA ammo. The MEA ammo is now being manufactured in by DSG Technology USA.
DR readers may remember that we originally broke the story on the MEA supercavitating/Cav-X Subsonic Armor-piercing Swimmer ammo, at NDIA Small Arms Systems Symposium 2011. Well, DSG Technology is also now manufacturing and marketing the iMortar ultra-lightweight 60mm mortar tube and ammo right here in the USA, and ArmorWorks President Bill Perciballi was kind enough to take us through the systems highlights on video (see below). The iMortar, just going into domestic (U.S.) production now, weighs approximately 12 lbs and is about 36 inches (36″) long. It uses a liquid site for elevation, and a blade sight for azimuth. It can be fired in trigger mode where you cock the mortar and fire in the tube for single-man firing, or you can fire it in automatic mode just like a standard mortar by dropping a mortar round down the tube for launch.
The iMortar’s extreme light weight is achieved through the use of “advanced materials”, on which Defense Review will try to glean more information. We’ll also try to find out if 81mm and 120mm iMortar weapon systems (launch tubes and ammo) are coming down the pike, at some point. And, if so, approximately when.
The DSG Technology/Mortars Inc. iMortar 60mm mortar rounds/munitions are also interesting in terms of the number and types of rounds, including the new thermobaric, white phosphorus, red phosphorus and illumination rounds in addition to the traditional high-explosive, smoke, and training/practice rounds. All the iMortar rounds utilize Junghans fuzes from Germany. Some of you may recognize Junghans as a manufacturer of fine watches, but we’re guessing their mortar round fuzes are just as good and reliable.
