While DefenseReview (DR) was walking the floor at NDIA SOFIC 2015 (Special Operations Forces Industry Conference 2015), we ran into Thomas Walsh of Corporate Arms, who we’d previously met at NDIA Joint Armaments Conference 2012 in Seattle, Washington while he was working for M-Series lightweight titanium silencer/sound suppressor manufacturer Falken Industries. Mr. Walsh showed us the new Corporate Arms SMG AR-format submachine gun and semi-auto-only carbine, which takes Glock magazines, and is avaliable in 9mm Parabellum/9x19mm NATO, .40 S&W, .357 SIG .45 ACP and 10mm Auto calibers.
The gun DR saw was a 9mm, and it looked pretty good, especially with the patented Q-Lock open-prong flash-hider/suppressor/mount, attachedA-TEC muzzle can (silencer/sound suppressor), and a 33-round Glock 18 mag in the magwell.
The 9mm and .40 S&W variants of the Corporate Arms SMG will all operate via direct blowback, while the .357 SIG, .45 ACP and 10mm Auto versions will be direct-gas-impingement (DGI)-operated. Please read the addendum/update below for details on this.
Defense Review likes the idea of a pistol-caliber semi-auto-only carbine loaded with 33-rounds of high-quality factory 9mm Parabellum +P or +P+ JHP (Jacketed Hollow Point) rounds (or less rounds in any of the other available calibers) for home defense. 9mm Parabellum out of a 14.5-16″ carbine barrel is a whole different animal velocity and punch-wise versus out of a pistol-length barrel, and is much quieter unsuppressed inside a structure than unsuppressed 5.56mm NATO/.223 Rem. ammo. That said, you can always keep a suppressed 5.56mm or .300 Blackout (.300BLK) tactical AR SBR (AR-15 Short Barreled Rifle/Sub-Carbine) or carbine by your bed, provided it’s legal in your state to do so, and you’re willing to go through the NFA hassle.
Addendum/Updated 6/11/15: DR received the following info this morning via email from Mr. Walsh, so we’ve updated edited this article accordingly: “To clarify for you, as some things have changed since the show…9mm and .40 S&W are going to operate via blowback, as mentioned at the show. However, .357 SIG, .45acp, and 10mm AUTO are going to operate via direct impingement. Yes, there is enough gas pressure for direct impingement in those calibers. The gas systems are extremely short and custom made. For example, the gas port on the barrel for the .45acp model is located less than 2 inches forward of the chamber. It is a little farther out on the other calibers, but certainly not as far out as 7” like on a 5.56mm rifle.”
