Lewis Machine & Tool Company surprised DefenseReview (DR) with the new LMT LM8MRP (LM8 Monolithic Rail Platform) and LM8MRP SS (Stainless-Steel Barrel) 5.56mm NATO (5.56x45mm NATO)/.223 Rem. tactical AR-15 upper receiver at SHOT Show 2012, and the new upper/rail design looks pretty slick. The LM8MRP sports LMT’s new lightweight modular rail system that both cuts weight off the standard MRP 5.56 and allows the end-user/operator to place textured rail segments (rail panel segments, or rail cover segments) of various lengths wherever he/she wants/needs them. The available LM8 rail segments are: 4 Rail (1 3/8″ length), 6 Rail (2 1/8″ length), 8 Rail (2 15/16″ length) and 10 Rail (3 3/4″ length).
Defense Review had no idea that LMT would be coming out with a new modular MRP rail system at SHOT, so it was a pleasant surprise, particularly since we liked the design. DR believes the LMT LM8 MRP 5.56 tactical AR upper receiver/complete rifle/carbine will be popular, and it would seem logical that it can be had in either direct-gas-impingement (DGI) or short-stroke gas piston/op-rod (push-type operating rod) configurations, just like the LMT CQB Defender MRP upper receiver/carbine, although we haven’t yet confirmed this. I mean, why not? That’s one of the cool things about bying an LMT MRP system, other than the QCB (Quick-Change Barrel) system.
The LMT LM8MRP upper receiver comes with the following:
– 16″ chrome-lined barrel with 1:7″ twist rate (1-in-7″ twist rate) or 16″ stainless-steel barrel with 1:7″ twist rate.
– Standard Semi-Auto Bolt Carrier Group (BCG)
– Tactical Charging Handle Assembly
– LMT CQB Defender Lower Receiver with SOPMOD Buttstock (SOCOM Stock) and Standard Trigger Group.
– Ships with a tactical sling, tactical adjustable rear sight, tactical front sight (A2-style), (4) rail segments, (2) heavy push-button swivels, 30-round mag (magazine), torch wrench/driver, and
operator’s manual.
The LMT LM8MRP complete rifle/carbine is currently listed at $2,030.79 USD, and the LMT LM8MRP SS complete rifle/carbine is currently listed at $2,163.99 USD.
