Vertx, the tactical clothing/gear line “for the Operational Athlete” introduced a brand new combat/tactical jacket at SHOT Show 2012 called the Vertx Tactical Smock, or Vertx MultiCam Smock. Billed as a “Wearable Go Bag” by the company, due to its numerous utility/storage pockets, the jacket allows the wearer to carry six (6) 30-round 5.56mm NATO (5.56x45mm NATO)/.223 Rem. rifle mags (magazines) in pockets specifically designed to do so. Vertx Business Development Manager Darrell Morrow was kind enough to take DefenseReview (DR) through the jacket at the company’s booth.
The Vertx Tactical Smock (MultiCam), oversized to go over your tactical armor plate carrier (body armor) and/or combat fleece, is made out of the company’s “Storm Fabric”, which is a 2-way stretch nylon fabric, and the one one Morrow wore for the product demo sported the very popular Crye MultiCam combat camo (camouflage) pattern. The “Storm Fabric” stretchy material is water-repellant/water-resistant on the outside and moisture-wicking (push/pull technology) on the inside.
The smock/jacket’s integral mag pouches (magazine pouches) are integrated into some of the larger pockets. The jacket features the following pockets: two (2) fleece-lined “hand-warmer” pockets on the lower front of the jacket, two (2) “Napoleon pockets” (chest pockets)/mag pouches in the upper chest portion of the jacket, two (2) mag pouches on each side of the lower portion of the jacket, two “poacher’s pockets”/mag pouches on the lower back/rear of the jacket, and two sleeve pockets on the biceps underneath the Velcro patch panels. All of these pockets are shown/ demonstrated in the embedded video clip, below.
Additional features include velcro closures on the cuffs, a large collar for keeping the wind off your neck (and styling), and a fleece-lined roll-up/detachable and cinchable hood, in case it starts raining on you.
Defense Review likes this jacket. The Vertx MultiCam Smock combat smock is an interesting piece of kit/gear that’s definitely worth checking out if you’re a tactical shooter, and it may very well end up becoming DR’s next combat jacket. We definitely want to run one through tactical shooting course and/or force-on-force gunfighting course. We’re curious as to how well the jacket’s outer fabric can handle Ultimate Training Munitions (UTM) and .68-caliber paintball hits at close range during force-on-force CQB/CQC (Close Quarters Battle/Close Quarters Combat) gunfighting training. Only one way to find out.
DefenseReview would like to thank Mr. Morrow for conducting the demo for us. He did a nice job, and was a good sport.
