DefenseReview (DR) readers may or may not be aware that your humble correspondent has three articles in the current issue of SureFire Combat Tactics Magazine (Fall 2011 issue) titled “Looking for a Ghost in a Haystack”, “Vital & Virtuous: Colt’s M4”, and the cover gun article “Sub-Compact Innovation” on the Colt SCW (Sub-Compact Weapon) select-fire tactical AR SBR (Short Barreled Rifle)/sub-carbine, respectively. But the Colt SCW isn’t the only cool thing on the cover. The U.S. military assaulter/spec-operator-looking dude on the cover is also sporting Orion Design Group’s (ODG) ODTDM-2 (Orion Designs Tradition Digital Mimicry-2) pattern arid-environment/multi-terrain combat camo (combat camouflage)–I mean, “Individual Signature Management” technology–which may be the first time the new camo’s been publicly shown. Orion also has Woodland/Jungle and Desert tan patterns, which the company will be introducing at SHOT Show 2012, and it’s DR’s understanding that all three patterns are currently competing for down-select in the U.S. Army Camouflage Improvement Plan(CIP) program.
According to ODG founder Brian Bishop, the company’s camouflage technology is multispectrum in capability and utilizes a proprietary print process that exceeds current U.S. military near-IR and Short Wave Infrared (SWIR) specifications. When Defense Review asked Bishop what makes ODG’s military combat camo/signature management patterns different from the competition, he told us that it ultimately comes down to ODG’s principals’ years of experience in both the military infantry combat and hunting arenas. Orion Design Group was founded by Brian Bishop of Combative Concepts (tactical training, including CQB/CQC shooting instruction) and Kelsey Gonzalez, both Marines (infantry). Mr. Bishop has previously worked as a consultant on other companies’ products in the tactical industry for a number of years, and he describes his childhood friend and business partner Mr. Gonzalez as “one of the best hunting guides in Northern Wyoming”.
There’s currently some “inside-the-beltway” buzz in the tactical community about ODG’s uber-mysterious/super-secret-squirl camo patterns, which will be showing up on a number of companies’ tactical gear (tactical nylon gear) products very soon. It’s DR’s understanding that Soldier Systems may be conducting an ODG camo scavenger hunt contest of sorts at SHOT Show 2012 and offering an ODG camo backpack or some other item for the winner.
Otte Gear will be utilizing a couple of ODG’s hunting camouflage patterns in their new hunting clothing line. DefenseReview is still trying to get ahold of a Otte Gear Recce Anorak to run at the range, and it would be interesting to see the Recce Anorak with the ODG ODTDM-2 camo pattern on it.
DR is curious as to how the ODG ODTDM-2 camo pattern stacks up against Crye Precision’s MultiCam in its effectiveness as a multi-environment/multi-terrain camouflage. We’ll have to wait on military operator feedback, of course.
