DefenseReview (DR) got a chance to examine the new Velocity Systems SCARAB DLX lightweight tactical armor plate carrier/tactical vest at SHOT Show 2017, and we liked what we saw. The new vest sports a lo-pro/lo-vis (low-profile/low-visibility) minimalist design, triangular laser-cut Cordura//Dyneema molle webbing, D-Ring system shoulder strap fasteners for enhanced mobility, one-piece shoulder pads for comfort, internal plastic inserts and mesh fabric for increased air flow/ventilation and overall comfort.
DR first saw a similar hard-ring-type type shoulder-strap system on a Hard Point plate carrier back in 2010 or 2011 (also at SHOT Show), so we know it works well and is comfortable. However, we don’t yet know how the Velocity Systems D-ring system differs from the Hard Point design–but we’ll try to find out. The Hard Point System we saw utilized large rings made from durable fabric (perhaps wrapped around some kind of wire). It appeared to be very strong.
Regardless, the Velocity Systems D-ring design seems like a good design, and it should optimize mobility and comfort during dynamic movement.
Velcocity Systems’ internal plastic inserts and mesh fabric panels for increased air flow/ventilation (and comfort) would also appear to be well designed. They appear to create a nice stand-off for the vest, without adding too much additional bulk/volume.
DR was also shown some of Velocity Systems also modular accessories like hard armor plate pockets and combat/tactical backpacks, and those also looked good to us.
All in all, the Velocity Systems SCARAB DLX plate carrier is a nice, minimalist package with all the latest and greatest features, and is worth looking at by anyone looking for this type of vest. Defense Review was impressed with its design and manufacturing quality.
Editor’s Note: While the SCARAB DLX plate carrier DR saw was finished in Crye MultiCam camo (camouflage) pattern fabric, one would think it would also be available in more lo-pro/lo-vis colors like urban grey, FDE (Flat Dark Earth, etc.). We’ll try to find out. In the meantime, enjoy the video below.
