Ashbury Precision Ordnance (APO) has really been kicking ass and taking names over the last year with their APOCS (APO Custom Shop) custom combat/tactical pistol packages with Trijicon RMR mini-red dot sight combat optics mounted on them, and DefenseReview (DR) has covered the hell out of that, but at SHOT Show 2016, APO showed us their SABER-FORSST MRCS-AR (Modular Rifle Chassis System-AR-15) that combines old-school and new-school tactical/sniper rifle/carbine/SBR (Short Barreled Rifle) technologies into one modular package. The new package leverages all of APO’s strengths into one combat/tactical rifle package, and takes that capability to the next level of ergonomics and performance.
The specific MRCS-AR modular rifle chassis system that APO President/CEO Morris Peterson showed us is designed around a Savage 110 7.62mm NATO (7.62x51mm NATO)/.308 Win. or 6.5 Creedmoor bolt-action rifle action/receiver, and the package integrates a new actagonal aluminum-alloy M-LOK tactical handguard/fore end rail tube, a Magpul MOE or CTR telescoping/telescoping stock (buttstock) with double-locking aluminum-alloy hinge joint, Magpul MOE Pistol Grip, and Magpul 5-round box mag (magazine).
The traditional spherical bolt handle/charging handle is nice and large for an easy/comfortable grip and pull, and the ambi (ambidextrous) mag-release lever is also oversized for quick, easy mag changes. These are both nice features, partularly when you’re using gloves in cold or arctic combat conditions. “All SABER bolt action receivers have fluted bolts, and receive a protective nitride finish that also enhances smooth bolt manipulation,” says Peterson. So, if you want to utilize the MRCS-AR for arctic operations, you should be good to go.
The APO SABER-FORSST MRCS-AR, which retails at “right around $825.00 [USD]”, comes in at under 10 lbs (pounds) OA weight, and looks good. DR likes the APO chassis design aesthetic, and APO’s guns have a reputation for being extremely accurate (sub-MOA).
Defense Review would very much like to do some long-range precision shooting with this package, ideally with a US Optics combat/tactical rifle scope with Horus Vision reticle system. Speaking of which, this would have been a really nice package to have had with us at the US Optics Academy Long Range Precision I Two-Day Precision Rifle/Long Range Interdiction (Sniping) Course taught by US Marine Corps sniper/instructor Tyler Hughes in the Southern California mountains.
