The 6.5 Grendel is arguably, theoretically, the most versatile tactical AR (AR-15) cartridge for everything from short to long-range engagements out to 800-100 yards. Well, FERFRANS Inc. just sent DefenseReview (DR) photos and video footage of a Ferfrans SOAR-P 18″-barreled select-fire/full-auto 6.5 Grendel Tactical Piston AR (AR-15-type) rifle/carbine prototype being tested at the range. Ferfrans makes both short-stroke piston/op-rod (push-type operating rod) AND direct-gas-impingement (DGI) tactical AR rifles, carbines and SBR’s (Short Barreled Rifles), but they’ve chosen to test the 6.5 Grendel using their in-house-designed piston tactical AR upper with adjustable gas block. The gun you see in the accompanying photos and videos was built/developed at the request of one of FERFRANS’ ITAR-approved foreign military clients, to the client’s spec, including the 6.5 Grendel cartridge and 18″ (18-inch) barrel.
Ferfrans President/CEO Ferdie Sy has told DefenseReview that the the prototype is reliable with the Ammunition Storage Components (ASC) 25-round 6.5 Grendel stainless steel magazine and two different rounds, the Prvi Partizan FMJBT 110gr (110-grain) and HPBT 120gr (120-grain). Those two rounds were chosen just for function testing.
Sy “loves” the 6.5 Grendel SOAR-P’s performance, so far. In fact, he likes it so much that he’s planning to make a 11.5-12.5″ SBR prototype soon for vehicle ops, aircraft ops, PSD security operations, dynamic CQB/CQC (Close Quarters Battle/Close Quarters Battle) gunfighting, jungle warfare, urban combat, etc., as well as a 14.5-16″ carbine.
Editor’s Note: The FERFRANS SOAR-P 6.5 Grendel tactical AR rifle/carbine prototype of course utilizes Ferfrans’ patented DSAS/RRS (Delayed Sear Activation System/Rate Reduction System) bolt carrier group (BCG) to bring the weapon’s cyclic rate of fire (ROF) below the 700-rpm threshold for maximum controllability and accuracy during full-auto fire.
