The ADM UIC-10A 7.62mm tactical AR (AR-10/SR-25-type) carbine wasn’t the only gun DefenseReview (DR) viewed and handled at the American Defense Manufacturing (ADM) /ADM Firearms booth at SHOT Show 2015. We also got to examine two two customized ADM UIC (Universal Improved Carbine) MOD 3 5.56mm NATO (5.56x45mm NATO)/.223 Rem./300 Blackout (300BLK) tactical AR (AR-15) carbine packages sporting an adjustable gas block and ambi controls (ambidextrous controls) and hydro-dipped Crye MultiCam and brown Tigerstripe combat camo (camouflage) coatings/finishes applied by Modern Outfitters. DR particularly liked the Tigerstripe camo pattern gun, but the MultiCam gun (featured in Issue 15 of Recoil Magazine) also looked good.
The primary feature of the ADM UIC that interests DR, aside from the cool camo patterns, is the ambidextrous lower receiver with full ambi controls, including ambi safety/selector switch, ambi mag (magazine) release button, and ambi BCG (Bolt Carrier Group) catch/release lever. DR is a proponent of the ambi BCG catch/release for malfunction clearance situations (and drills). The only two caveats to it, in our opinion, are 1) it’s another potential point of entry into the gun, so it can potentially get clogged with particulate matter (sand, dirt, mud, etc.), and 2) once you get used to it, it will probably make clearing malfunctions on a non-ambi gun a bit more difficult and time-consuming for you. So, while it definitely offers a speed and ergonomic advantage, it also necessitates a different manual of arms. Regardless, DR really likes the ADM ambi lower, especially when you combine it with an ambi charging handle like the BCM BCMGunfighter Ambidextrous Charging Handle (5.56mm/.223) w/ Mod A44 (Ambi) or Rainier Arms Raptor Ambi Charging Handle. Plus, ADM COO John Gross told us that the ambi BCG catch/release mechanism is both rugged and fluid in its operation, is a very simple (KISS principle) design with as few parts as possible, and easily maintained in the field. If it somehow gets clogged, just shotgun the receiver open, quickly wipe off the inside, close the gun back up, and you’re rockin’ n’ rollin’ again. Easy peasy.
According to Recoil, the gun they featured, and shown in our video below, was outfitted with a 60-degree-throw ambi safety/selector switch for enhanced ergonomics. It’s Defense Review’s understanding the the ADM UIC MOD 3 and ADM UIC-10A 7.62mm battle carbine/SBR have this (60-degree throw) aspect AND the new ADM 2-Stage AR Combat Trigger (see second/bottom video below) in the future. The Griffin Armament Fail Safe Angle Sights (FSAS) and ADM AD-MOB (Modular Offset Base) (both 45-degree-offset) are avaialable for separate purchase. The AD-MOB is a 45-degree-offset mini red dot sight/combat optic mount. DR doesn’t know if the GA FSAS front BUIS can be co-witnessed with a rear 45-degree-offset mini red dot sight/combat optic.
Both of the customized ADM UIC guns featured in the video below are outfitted with either a siliencer/sound suppressor-ready Griffin Armament M4SD Flash Comp 5.56mm or GA Taper Mount Flash Comp, and the MultiCam gun combined this with a GA QD Blast Shield (triangular). The ADM UIC MOD 3’s adjustable gas block has a suppressor setting on it if you decide to quick-attach a Griffin Armament muzzle can (silencer/sound suppressor). Mr. Gross told DR that the Griffin cans are really good. The UIC MOD 3 adjustable gas block also has an “off” setting for taking ultra-quiet single shots in situations where you don’t want the BCG to reciprocate.
DR wants to find out more about the Mil-Std-1913 “Picatinny” rail system featured on the Tigerstripe camo gun, and also more about the available rail options on the UIC 5.56mm guns (UIC MOD 1, UIC MOD 2 and UIC MOD 3), but the gun featured in the top video features a MLOK rail system, although KeyMOD rails are also available.
It’s Defense Review’s understanding that limited runs of 60-100 combat camo-coated/finished guns in both respective patterns (MultiCam and Tigerstripe) will be available for purchase on a first-come, first-serve basis, soon.
DR likes the B5 Systems Enhanced SOPMOD and Bravo SOPMOD telescoping/retractable AR stocks (buttstocks), so we think this is a good choice by ADM. For the record, we’re also fans of the Ark Defense Enhanced SOPMOD Buttstock. Both companies make an excellent product. We’ll try to get confirmation on the make and model of the UIC’s pistol grip, and update this article accordingly.
