Maxim Defense showed DefenseReview (DR) their PDX 5.56mm NATO (5.56x45mm NATO)/7.62mm Russian (7.62x39mm Russian) AR (AR-15)-type Personal Defense Weapon (PDW)-type SBR (Short Barreled Rifle) at SHOT Show 2019, and we liked what we saw and handled. The Maxim Defense PDX sports a VERY short 5.5″ (5.5-inch) barrel with a Maxim Defense HATEBRAKE (also written “Hate Brake”) “Muzzle Booster” under the M-LOK tactical handguard/rail system in order increase back pressure (and thus reliability) and attenuate/mitigate muzzle blast and flash.
Since the Maxim Defense PDX’s barrel is so short, it requires a proprietary BCG (Bolt Carrier Group) and SCW Buffer and Spring system (with buffer spring). The PDX’s gas system is adjustable/tunable at the armorer level. The PDX also utilizes the Maxim Defense SCW Stock system, which limits stock length to 4″ (4 inches), and overall (OA) weapon lengh to 18.75″ (18.75 inches), when fully collapsed. The Maxim SCW stock can be pulled out one-handed to full extension for immediate weapon deployment. Empty weight is only 5 lbs 11 oz.
The civilian/commercial-market PDX variant will feature an ALG Defense trigger system, while the military and law enforcement variant will sport a Geissele Automatics trigger system.
Obviously, the Maxim Defense PDX is intended for lo-pro/lo-vis (low-profile/low-visibility Special Operations Forces (SOF) missions where a weapon might have to be concealed under light civilian clothing, including just an open button-down shirt or camp shirt.
DR doesn’t yet know if the PDX can be reliably suppressed, but we’ll try to find out, and update this article accordingly. In the meantime, enjoy DR’s video below of Maxim Defense’s Joe Wheeler taking us through the high points of the weapon’s features, specs and design goals.
Needless to say, Defense Review wouldn’t mind getting a PDX into DR writer/contributor and chief new-product tester Jeff Gurwitch’s very capable hands at some point, in whichever caliber he prefers.
Oh, and current MSRP is $2,299.00 USD, as of this writing, by the way, which isn’t too crazy.
