DefenseReview (DR) got to view and handle the new CZ P-10 C compact striker-fired semi-auto 9mm (9mm Parabellum/9x19mm NATO) combat/tactical pistol at SHOT Show 2017, and we came away VERY impressed with it. It would appear to be very well designed, with a terrific trigger, a nice grip (and grip angle), very strong and tight barrel/slide lock-up, durable construction and finish, and 15+1 mag (magazine) capacity. Bottom line, if the CZ P-10 C performs as well as it looks and handles, it’s going to be a winner, and may even eventually prove to be a superior design to the factory Glock 17 (G17) and Glock 19 (G19).
Editor’s Note: the G19 is your humble correspondent’s current primary concealed carry (CCW) gun, although a Walther PPS single-stack sub-compact 9mm pistol may soon enter DR’s CCW arsenal as a primary alternative and/or addition, as it’s arguably currently the best of the bunch in this genre (slim-line single-stack sub-compact pistol), which includes the Smith and Wesson (S&W) M&P SHIELD and Glock 43 (G43) slim-line (single-stack) 9mm sub-compact pistols.
Anyway, the reason we say that the CZ P-10 C 9mm pistol may well prove to be a superior design to the Glock G17 and G19 pistols is that, according to DR writer/contributor and highly-respected combat/tactical shooting instructor Mike Pannone of CTT Solutions prefers the P-10 C’s trigger, ambidextrous controls (slide stop/release, mag release, and takedown lever), very strong locking block, (precise/tight) barrel-to-slide lock-up, metal magazine and magazine release internals to the G17 or G19’s comparative design features. To Pannone’s point about the trigger, when DR handled the P-10 C, we immediately noticed and liked the trigger’s slightly-curved, almost-flat shape, take-up, pull weight (listed at 4-4.5 lbs) and crisp break, and it’s seemingly very short/quick reset, which should all be conducive to very fast, accurate shooting at combat distances, especially since the P-10 C’s bore axis is so low, and the (dovetail) sight radius is so long. When we spoke with Pannone, he confirmed how well the P-10 C shoots. He’s put approximately 4,000 rounds through the P-10 C as of our phone conversation with him yesterday (3/14/17), and thinks it’s terrific.
Editor’s Note: Watch DR’s video below (first/top video) to see the author discussing the the various features of the P-10 C, and particularly the trigger, with CZ USA’s Zach Hein, who was kind enough to take us through the gun at SHOT.
Pannone also told us that the tight barrel/slide lock-up makes for virtually match-grade accuracy right out of the box, and that the ultra-strong locking block should help make the P-10 C extremely durable in terms of achieving a very high round count before failure. And, the barrel is CHF (Cold Hammer Forged).
DR doesn’t yet know the P-10 C’s slide metallurgy or finish, nor do we know the grip/gripframe’s construction design or polymer formula or type, but we’ll try to find out. We do know that the grip felt good to us (perhaps with some filing of the stippling, if it was too agressive for us, not sure, and easily fixed, if so), and the grip angle seemed good for natural pointing.
Bottom line, the CZ P-10 C 9mm pistol was one of the two most interesting new pistols DR handled at SHOT. The other was the Arsenal Firearms Stryk B striker-fired pistol, which is also interestingly designed. We’ll be reporting on that pistol next, and are curious as to how the two pistols stack up against each other.
We’re also interested in seeing how the P-10 C 9mm performs versus a Nous Defions Arsenal Democracy custom Glock 17 and/or Glock 19-type pistol(s), Ashbury Precision Ordnance APO Custom Shop (APOCS) G17 and G19 pistols, VooDoo Innovations VDI Enforcer Glock 17 (G17) Slide and Barrel and Grip Force Adapter for Glock combat/tactical and competition pistols, VDI Slayer Glock 17 (G17) Slide/Upper Group, and the new, American-made Caracal Enhanced F Standard (Three-Dot) and Quick Sight pistols, respectively, especially when you mount a mini red dot combat optic on it (P-10 C).
Defense Review really wants to get a CZ P-10 C 9mm pistol into DR writer/contributor and chief new-product tester Jeff Gurwitch’s very skilled, experienced, and knowledgable hands as soon as possible. Jeff’s not only a retired SOF (Special Operations Forces) assaulter/operator, he’s also a successful competitive 3-Gunnner (3-Gun competitive shooter). If he says it’s good to go, it is.
By the way, CZ also makes a CZ P-10 C 9mm (Low Capacity) model that carries 10+1 rounds, and a CZ P-10 C .40 model, that carries 12+1 rounds of .40 S&W ammo, in case either of those floats your boat. We’ll stick with the CZ P10 C 9mm with 15+1 rounds.
The following CZ P-10 C information comes directly from the CZ USA website:
“Many years in the making, we’re pleased to announce the latest addition to the CZ line of handguns — the P-10 C. Much more than just our take on the striker-fired pistol, the P-10 is decidedly CZ, from the way it feels to the way it shoots.
First order of business, ergonomics. Anyone who’s picked up a CZ 75 for the first time gets it — it just has to feel right in the hand. With the CZ grip angle, the P-10 avoids that ‘brick-in-the-hand’ feeling that has plagued many in the striker-fired genre, allowing it to point naturally. A mild palm swell, deep beavertail and three interchangeable backstraps make the P-10 fit a wide variety of hands as if it were built for them. Because it was.
Next up, trigger. So many striker-fired pistols do many things right, falling short when it comes time to pull the trigger. Designed to minimize creep and stacking, the P-10’s trigger breaks at a clean 4-4.5 lbs and rebounds with a short, positive reset, meaning single shots can be meticulously placed while follow-ups are effortless.
Built to withstand the rigors of military use, its fiber-reinforced polymer frame and hardy nitride finish are made for the daily grind. A generous trigger guard allows use with gloved hands while being undercut to allow as high a grip as possible, and a set of metal tactical 3-dot sights allow for one-handed manipulation of the slide on a belt.
Like all CZ pistols, the P-10 is built with our legendary cold hammer forged barrel. The ‘C’ in the name indicates that it is compact in both frame and slide size, and magazines are of the same family as the hammer-fired P-07, meaning the P-10 C holds 15+1 in 9mm in a flush-fitting mag with extended bases allowing 17+1.Take-down of the P-10 will be familiar to most fans of striker-fired guns, and even more pleasing will be holster compatibility with some of the most common guns on the market.
It may have taken a while to come to market, but we feel the wait has been worth it. With CZ reliability, engineered ergonomics and a bevy of features both familiar and new, the P-10 is the complete package.
