Earlier this year, at SHOT Show 2017 and SOFIC (Special Operations Forces Industry Conference) 2017, respectively, DefenseReview (DR) filmed some product demos on the Wilcox Industries Fusion AMP Rail powered rail system with a BOSS 300 (or, 300 BOSS) Black Out Sighting System red dot sight combat optic/IR Laser Aimer/Illuminator (with visible laser, as well) and Wilcox Magnifying Optic Mount, comprising a combined system for combat/tactical AR (AR-15) carbine/SBR’s (Short Barreled Rifles), and we came away really impressed with the combined system. Everything in the system is well designed and thought out, particularly when it comes to streamlining and power reliability.
First, the Wilcox Fusion AMP Rail powered rail system looks really good (and let’s face it, looks are important), is pretty streamlined, and sports a secondary/back-up battery pack that automatically kicks in when the first pack gives up, providing reliable power redundancy. The rail allows you to run the Wilcox BOSS 300 combat optic/laser aimer/illuminator (more on that particular item below) and tactical white light (like the excellent SureFire Vampire tactical white/IR light head), with no wires outside to get caught or otherwise cause trouble. The Fusion AMP Rail’s batter pack contains two batteries and a switch on the outside that can be operated quickly to manually switch to the second battery when the first one runs out of juice.
The Wilcox BOSS 300, itself, is pretty spectacular. Assuming it works as advertised, it’s the best-designed and most streamlined red dot sight combat optic and visible/IR laser aimer/illuminator module (combined system) DR’s ever seen, whether it’s for the 300 Blackout (300BLK) cartridge, or the standard 5.56mm NATO (5.56x45mm NATO) cartridge. Not only is it a super-streamlined all-in-one combat optic and visible/IR laser aimer/illuminator, but it sports a manual switch that allows the operator to instantly switch from supersonic to subsonic ammo (and vice-versa), without having to adjust the optic for bullet drop. The BOSS 300 automatically adjusts it for you when the switch is flipped. Pretty slick (and sleek).
But, we’ll let Travis Mitchell talk about the BOSS 300’s advantages, other than its aforementioned sleek, minimalist profile: “The best thing about this feature [BOSS 300 subsonic/supersonic switch] is, it also has…when I zero my red dot, all my lasers are co-aligned. Also, I can go from [supersonic] to subsonic with a flip of a switch. We just designed a new screw in here, so whether my [bullet] drop is 2 inches to 22 inches, I can now control the drop of the supersonic round. Or, I could set this up on an [M4/M4A1 Carbine/SBR], and make it my CQB sight, and then my over-the-beach [OTB] sight. So, if I flip the switch, when I’ve got my…in close, I’ve got a 3 or 7-meter shot, usually you aim at the top of the head, now you can aim center of the target, and hit it where you’re supposed to hit it, instead of [aiming] at the top of the head,” said Mitchell.
As if that’s not enough, the Wilcox Fusion AMP Rail is quick and easy to break down and reassemble, as you can see below (videos).
Oh, and Wilcox also makes a nifty magnifying optic mount, which you can also see demonstrated below.
Defense Review REALLY likes this system, as it looks like the proverbial shiznit.
