The Phantom Ops Airflow Tactical Pant wasn’t the only new and interesting product that Vertx introduced at SHOT Show 2014. The company also introduced a plethora of lo-pro/lo-vis tactical bags that looked really well-designed and ultra-utilitarian. Vertx Prostaffer Joe Yorio, Jr. was nice enough to take us through all of them, starting with the Vertx EDC Courier and EDC Satchel lo-pro/lo-vis tactical messenger bags, which are shoulder-worn bags. We should perhaps note that DefenseReview (DR) has never used messenger bags before. We use combat/tactical packs (backpacks) over here. Hell, we’ve never even written about them before, but the EDC Courier and EDC Satchel are so slickly designed and comfortable looking, we felt they warranted the coverage.

The Vertx EDC Courier bag is the larger of the two, and the one Yorio showed us sported a nice smoke grey color scheme. Grey is the new black, so to speak, in the tactical world, meaning it’s the latest hot color, especially for urban tactical gear and wear. The EDC Courier can fit a 15+-inch laptop, has plenty of pockets for carrying lots of stuff, and features a dedicated back compartment for concealing a pistol/handgun with a giant pull-strap/pull-tab for ultra-fast grabbing and opening. The jumbo pull-tab enables you to pull the bag from your back or your side to your front very quickly before you open the compartment and draw the pistol. Yorio had a Glock 17 (G17) pistol trainer/simulator in the Satchel’s rear compartment, to demonstrate that even the smaller bag could hold and conceal a full-sized pistol no problem.

Inside both bags are velcro panels for instantly mounting the pistol, or anything else you want to mount. This is accomplished with Vertx Velcro MOLLE sheaths/holsters to fit any size and type of pistol. Yorio’s Glock 17 pistol sheath/holster was a Bladetech with a MOLLE-compatible back with a Vertx Vecro sheet attached to it. With this system, you can mount pretty much anything and everything, including tactical lights, knives, batons, you name it, and you can mount them anywhere inside the pocket.

The Vertx EDC Satchel and Courier are also convertable from lo-pro/lo-vis to tactical profile by pulling the outer lo-pro pocket panel down, pulling the outer MOLLE Velcro panel out, and tucking the lo-pro outer panel up underneath an inside pocket while it’s still attached at the bottom–and you can do this really fast. So, the bag can go right from the airport in lo-pro to the range in hi-vis, and vice versa. If you’re using the bag(s) as a range bag, there’s yet another useful feature, an outer gear basket.

Messenger bags offer a distinct speed and ergonomic advantage over packs (backpacks) for pulling items out of the bag, including concealed pistols, especially while moving. There are situations where it may be advantageous to carry one’s concealed pistol in a bag, rather than on one’s body. And, if that’s the case, a messenger bag that affords the ability to mount a pistol in a hidden rear compartment, and thus carry it concealed, is arguably the best way to go for a fast draw off the body. Even with a well-designed hidden rear concealment compartment on a tactical pack, reaching behind you to unzip the compartment and draw a pistol is going to be significantly slower and more difficult than performing the same action in front or to the side of you.

So, if you’re thinking about acquiring a bag of this type, the EDC Courier and EDC Satchel will be tough to beat. So, check ’em out in the video below and on the Vertx website.
