DefenseReview ran across Legion Firearms tactical AR carbines (AR-15 carbines) and 1911 pistols at SHOT Show 2012, but for some reason, we never got around to publishing the videos we shot. Well, all that's gonna' change right here. The Legion tacical AR carbines at SHOT were the Legion LF-15c model tactical AR carbines, but the company recently introduced the new Legion LF-15d tactical AR carbine with what DR presumes are a Mega Machine Shop/Mega Arms upper and lower receiver and modular Mil-Std-1913 "Picatinny" rail system/forend rail tube.
Just like the LF-15c, the LF-15d sports Legion's signature "hexagonnally-fluted"/hexagonally-dimpled barrel to cut weight (and look cool), Phase 5 Tactical Ambi Battle Latch/Charging Handle Assembly (ABL/CHA) large ambidextrous charging handle, BattleComp 2.0 SCV compensator/muzzle device and WMD Guns NiB-X (Nickel-Boron)-coated internals. At SHOT, Reeves informed Defense Review that the guns (ARs) we were looking at utilized a Cerakote H Coat ceramic coating.
Editor's Note: The Phase 5 Tactical Ambi Battle Latch looks pretty good, and DR is keen to run one on one of our guns, sometime.
When we interviewed Legion's Chris Reeves, he took us throught the carbines and one of their custom/semi-custom tactical 1911 pistols, which we believe was a Legion LF-P45 with omni-directional serrations. Notice Steve Fisher of MagPul Dynamics in the embedded photos of the Legion 1911 pistol, below.
The embedded video clips, below, cover both products.
Military.com KitUp! published a piece on the Legion LF-15c back in July 2011. In that article, they discussed Jamie Wehmeyer (Legion Firearms) running 17 mags of XM193 5.56mm ammo back-to-back on semi-auto as fast as he could shoot in 110-degree heat both suppressed and unsuppressed, but that's semi-auto shooting. DR would be interested to see how a select-fire Legion LF-15d carbine or SBR (Short Barreled Rifle)/sub-carbine with a FERFRANS DSAS/RRS (Delayed Sear Activation System/Rate Reduction System) bolt carrier group (BCG) installed handles full-auto shooting in a similar shooting test.
DR found the following passage from the KitUp! piece interesting:
“Our barrels are 1 in 8 [twist], but we use a non-standard bore in a match grade three groove polygonal twist,” said Legion’s Jamie Wehmeyer. “So for instance we can shoot 77 grain without loss of accuracy. We actually exceed mil-spec standards…and though it may seem like a small distinction, [the LF-15C] is chambered in 5.56mm NATO, not .223.
Since the Legion barrels utilize a slower 1:8 twist rate (versus 1:7), polygonal barrel bore and hexagonal fluting/dimpling on the outer surface, they may be able to hold up to a decent amount of full-auto shooting with a FERFRANS RRS/DSAS installed, even if they're not machine gun barrels like those on FERFRANS Specialties military-grade select-fire guns. This is just a theory, however…a theory that would have to be tested.
Editor's Note: Notice the INFORCE WML (Weapon Mounted Light) tactical white light/weapon light in the second photo (above). DR contributor Jeff Gurwitch wrote a great review of this product back in December, 2011.
