We here at DefenseReview (DR) are big fans and longtime users of the maglula LULA AR (AR-15) Rifle Mag Loader/Unloader, which has made loading and unloading magazines a relative breeze compared with trying to do it the old-fashioned way with just your thumbs. When we’re loading mags during our FERFRANS SOAR select-fire tactical AR SBR (Short Barreled Rifle) full-auto shooting sessions, the LULA is a godsend. It’s also the original rifle magazine loader/unloader, and therefore perhaps the best-known one. More recently, we’ve also used the CAA Tactical ML556 magazine loader successfully during high-volume/high-round-count shooting and tactical training sessions.
The LULA and ML556 are both effective, easy to use, lightweight, and compact, and those latter two aspects make them easy to pack and transport with the rest of your tactical shooting gear out to the range. They’re actually pocket-sized, so you can literally stick them in your pocket, if necessary. However, if you’re willing to go with something a little larger (although still relatively compact, lightweight, and easy to pack/transport) for loading your high-capacity (30 rounds and up) 4179 STANAG AR-15/M15/M4/M4A1 and/or Kalashnikov AK-47/AKM rifle mags even quicker and with even less physical effort, the Cammo Brothers (CB) Mag Loader (PDF format) might just be the ticket for you, since this rifle magazine loader simplifies “fast and efficient speed loading for high capacity magazines”. DR ran into Cammo Brothers at SHOT Show 2011, and we had a nice time at their booth. They were very helpful and enthusiastic about their product, and the CB Mag Loader product demo made it look very quick and easy to use.
So, how does it work? Just insert your rifle mag, place up to 20 rounds in the loading tray, and pull the sliding handle down towards the magazine briskly, and you’ve just loaded up to 20 rounds into the magazine with one easy, deliberate tug. You’re 2/3rds done. A SureFire MAG5-60 HCM quad-stack 60-shot AR rifle mag will take three 20-round pulls to fully load. Pretty easy.
The CB AR/AK Mag Loader is made with high-density nylon fiberglass for maximum durability/ruggedness and reliability for long-term performance under adverse conditions, and there’s a “no questions asked” lifetime replacement guarantee on it. According to Cammo Brothers’ marketing literature, “any loader returned for any reason will be replaced free of charge”.
Defense Review hasn’t actually utilized the Cammo Brothers AR/AK Rifle Mag Loader (PDF format) for our own mag loading sessions yet, but we’re looking forward to doing so. We’re going to try to acquire a few of them for T&E.
