We here at DefenseReview (DR) are, historically, unabashed Glock 9mm guys (specifically the Glock 19, or G19). That’s what we carry. However, Walther Arms (and Walther USA) appear to be really killing it with their PPQ (Police Pistol Quick Defense Trigger) and PPS pistols, and we really liked the new Walther PPQ M2 SC sub-compact striker-fired 9mm combat/tactical pistol we handled at SHOT Show 2018. The gun looks and feels great, and has a great trigger pull with quick/short reset. We liked pretty much everything about it, and we’re pretty hard to please, by the way.
Being striker-fired, the Walther PPQ M2 SC subcompact 9mm pistol has a low bore axis. It sports the aforementioned quick/short trigger reset, 3.5″ barrel, ambi (ambidextrous) slide stop/release lever, hot-swappable (reversible) mag release button) and 10-round double-stack mag (magazine) as standard, but you can up your game to a 15-round mag that features a well-designed +5 extended magazine base pad–and this is how DR would carry this gun. Not only do you get greater ammo capacity, but you also get a longer grip that’s much easier to grab quickly and hold onto in a contact-distance fight. The gun also just plain looks better and better balanced in this configuration.
16 rounds of 9mm ammo in a (sub-compact) pistol of this size, with this good of a trigger, is pretty fantastic. So, we dig it, and we want one. MSRP is $649.00 USD, as of this writing, and the gun’s already available for purchase.
Unfortunately, Defense Review didn’t get to test-fire the Walther PPQ M2 SC pistol at Industry Day at the Range 2018, but if it shoots like a Walther, it has to be pretty good. We’ll of course try to remedy this situation and get our hands on one for testing, ideally by DR writer/contributor and chief new-product tester Jeff Gurwitch. If he says it’s good to go, it’s good to go.
In the meantime, enjoy the video we shot below.
Editor’s Note: We’re currently linking to the standard Walther PPQ SC pistol page, since Walther doesn’t appear to have a page up on the new M2 variant yet. Oh, and a special thanks to Luke Thorkildsen for taking time with us to show us all of Walther’s latest and greatest pistols.
