When the U.S. Navy SEALs, specifically U.S. Naval Special Warfare Development Group (NSWDG)/DEVGRU assaulters/operators, helo’d into Usama Bin Laden’s (UBL) compound during the kill operation, it’s quite likely they were carrying a number of U.S. Ordnance Mk43 Mod 1/M60E4 Commando 7.62x51mm NATO (7.62mm NATO) Medium Machine Guns/General Purpose Machine Guns (MMG/GPMG) with them on the mission in case things got really hairy and/or went FUBAR with the Pakistani authorities.

DefenseReview published some pretty intense video footage of the Mk43 Mod 1/M60E4 Commando in action in 2008, but U.S. Ordnance has updated and upgraded the weapon system into a new “Enhanced” version (pictured with silencer/sound suppressor mounted) with new furniture and features, including (but not limited to) desert tan/dark earth handguards, feed tray cover, pistol grip, and buttstock, and an improved/modified push-button safety (on the trigger/grip module).

The U.S. Ordnance M60E4/Mk43 Mod 1 MMG’s only real competition with regard to combat capability at relatively low overall (OA) weight is the FN MK48 Mod 1, which has also reportedly been performing well in combat. The two weapons appear to be pretty evenly matched, combat capability-wise and weight-wise.

The M60E4/Mk43 Mod 1 MMG/GPMG ran flawlessly with no malfunctions experienced at the range over several boxes of ammo.
