DefenseReview (DR) recently got the chance to check out some very intresting “zero-fog” ballistic goggles at SOFIC (Special Operations Forces Industry Conference) 2017, made by a company called A-BOM (also written ABOM). The key to the A-BOMB goggle’s extreme anti-fog capability is their patented KLAIR heated composite lens technology, which “makes it impossible for fog to survive on the inner surface of protective eyewear”, according to A-BOM CEO Jack Cornelius. Mr. Cornelius eplained the technology to DR thus: “We [do] that by having a thin-film transparent conductive layer built into a sandwich between two polycarbonate layers of lens, and we power that with a micro-computer. And, once we turn the power on, you can see the little blue light there [demonstrates]. It heats up the inside just slightly, enough to overcome dewpoint [also written “dew point”]. And, once the heat’s there on the inner lens, you have no problem with fog.” Sounds good to us.
A-BOM goggles have two modes: 1) Active Mode, which is powered on (and off) with a long press and stays on, eliminating fog all day, and 2) Boost Mode, which is powered on demand, eliminating fog “when you need it”. Boost Mode is powered by a quick tap on, stays on for 10 minutes, and then automatically powers off. Easy peasy.
It gets better, Mr. Cornelius told DR that A-Bomb “zero-fog” anti-fog sunglasses are currently in the works (i.e., under development). DR can’t wait to get a pair of those for T&E (test and evaluation) and review.
Defense Review was both impressed with, and intrigued by, the A-BOMB anti-fog lens tech. We hope it actually works as advertised. Assuming it does, we could have really used these during our force-on-force training, on several occasions, as it would have obviated the need to rub the dishwashing liquid on the inside of our goggles.
By the way, DR is curious as to how the A-BOM KLAIR anti-fog lens tech stacks up against the Edge Tactical Eyewear (ETE) Vapor Shield anti-fog lens tech in speed and effectiveness in adverse combat conditions, including high-heat, high-humidity atmospheric conditions. THAT would be an interesting comparison, once A-BOM starts producing their sunglasses.
The following information on A-Bomb goggles comes directly from the ABOMB website:

OUR STORY
HOW A GAME-CHANGING GOGGLE WAS BORN
FOG.
THE BIGGEST
BUZZ KILL.
You’re at the top of the run and ready to rip it up. But there’s a problem we’ve all had that will stop any session cold: fogged goggles.
Fog is made when vapor in the air turns to water faster than it can evaporate. The biggest bummer is when that happens inside your goggles. And once they’re fogged, your session is struggling. If you can’t see, you can’t ski.
THE SOLUTION: KLAIR™ TECHNOLOGY
HOW IT WORKS
Our patented KLAIR™ technology places an invisible heat-conductive film between a two-part lens. The battery sends a current through the film to heat the lens and keep fog away all day. It’s the most powerful, comfortable, effective technology ever put in a goggle.
ACTIVE ANTI-FOG VS. FOG RESISTANT
Fog resistant goggles fail because they’re more work than they’re worth, requiring you to constantly adjust vents, turn on fans, or repeatedly wipe the lens.
Active Anti-Fog technology works without you having to do anything because the lens is continuously powered—never allowing fog to form in the first place.
