While DefenseReview was walking the floor at SHOT Show 2013, we came across a very interesting company called Hydrapak, which makes a very cool military tactical hydration reservoir called the Hydrapak First Wave (1st Wave) Military Reservoir, that features a "super-slider" slide-top opening, "plug and play" disconnect system and a reversible reservoir that's 4mm thick military-grade/MILSPEC thermopolyurethane (TPU), which is twice the thickness of the consumer model.
The Hydrapak First Wave Military Reservoir's "super slider" slide-opening mechanism makes for easy, fast filling and emptying from the top, and the reversible reservoir makes for easy cleaning and fast drying, since you can turn the reservoir inside out, just like sock–perhaps not the best image when discussing imbibing fluids, but it gets the point across.
Pretty awesome, but that's not all, Monty! The Hydrapak 1st Wave Military Reservoir also features a "proprietary one-piece Hydrofusion Insulated Big Bore tube that is lighter than standard neoprene insulation and has the insulation applied to the tube rather than covered with a sleeve." The tube connects into the aforementioned "plug and play" disconnect/valve exit spout, which is "compatible with many other filter elements and products on the market right now," according to Hydrapak representative Matt Lyon. "This connects to our drink tube. So, with a "snap", now you're ready to drink," says Lyon.
The "Hydrafusion" drink tube, itself, is a non-textile insulated tube that's "co-extruded with a regular TPU at the center and a foam TPU on the outside for insulation. But this is not textile. It can't snag. It doesn't absorb water. And, if you want to adjust the length of the tube, you can just take a pair of scissors and cut it, and it's perfect, just like the current length it's in."
The Surge-valve (bite valve) is a high-flow bite-activated valve with easy-twist shut-off feature and a nice dust cover.
The newest Hydrapak First Wave Military Reservoir product is the 1-liter model, which is shown in the embedded video below.
