For the last 7 months, I’ve been using a Holsters Plus Sure-Lock 3-10 tactical kydex pistol holster with a 10-degree forward cant to carry my Glock 19 (G19) 9mm Parabellum (9x19mm NATO) pistol, and, so far, I’m very pleased with it. The Sure-Lock 3 – 10 is a retention holster that utilizes an interesting retention mechanism that’s very secure, yet very fast and safe, to disengage quickly on the draw.
In fact, the retention mechanism is so fast to disengage that the Sure-Lock would appear to allow as fast a draw as the Blackhawk CQC Tactical Serpa holster, and possibly even faster. DefenseReview hasn’t tested this, yet, though.
How it works:…
The Sure-Lock series of holsters lock into the trigger guard. As you draw the weapon from the holster, your middle finger will naturally slip underneath the retention/release tab, pushing it out far enough to release the pistol for the draw. The release tab feature’s an outward-canting, rounded/smooth-edged lip to allow the middle finger to slip underneath it easily and comfortably. The only concern Defense Review has with the Sure-Lock design is the effect that repeated draws can potentially have on the upper portion user’s middle finger if he/she performs a large quantity of practice draws, since the Sure-Lock’s release tab is kydex, which is not a soft material. We’d also like to try a 15-degree forward cant (a.k.a. "FBI cant") version, instead of 10-degrees.
Quality of manufacture on the Sure-Lock 3-10 kydex holster is excellent, and as good as anything else out there, as far as we can tell. DefRev had the pleasure of meeting Holsters Plus owner William Smullin in his shop while we were accompanying a friend of ours who was having Mr. Smullin build a kydex knife holster for a custom knife (fixed blade) he’d designed. We liked what we saw, so we asked him for one of his canted holsters for review.
Let’s just say that the Holsters Plus Sure-Lock 3 – 10 tactical kydex holster gets the DefRev thumbs up, and a definite recommend for anyone looking for a high-quality tactical kydex retention holster that will allow you to execute an extremely fast (and safe) draw.
Note: Holsters Plus also offers single and double mag pouches, also made from kydex.
